Time for Taveras to Go

Frankly put, Willy Taveras is not a Major League regular.  He is out of place as a starter, as a leadoff man, and as any threat to get on base.

The Reds leadoff man is hitting a ridiculous .244/.286/.296 with an OPS+ of 53 and a wOBA of .269.  I don’t know if people realize how bad he is offensively.  Those numbers are inexcusable and should not be allowed on a major league roster, let alone in a starting role.

Taveras’ only offesnive asset is his wheels and he only has 17 steals on the season.  I think it’s kinda hard to steal bases when you never actually reach base.  There is no place in the majors for a player like this except for as a pinch-runner and defensive replacement.

Has absolutely zero power.  His ISO is .052 and his HR/FB ratio is 1.3%.  You would hope that a guy with his speed and lack of power would at least hit line drives but that is not the case; Taveras only hits line drives 15.9% of the time.

So, who should take over for Taveras (only if Dusty Baker were smart enough to replace him)?  I suggest either Chris Dickerson or Drew Stubbs.

Dickerson may not have Taveras’ speed but he superior in every other category.  His UZR/150 in center is +32.8 compared to Taveras at +3.7.  Dickerson’s offensive line is .277/.370/.385 with an OPS+ of 98 and a wOBA of .339.  His ISO is more than twice as good as Taveras’ at .108.

Stubbs is in Triple-A and hitting .274/.368/.365 with a .354 wOBA and 20 doubles, 40 walks, and 33 steals.  Stubbs has plus-plus speed, is very patient, a plus defender, and has some decent pop in his bat.  Oh, and he has 29 outfield assists in 308 minor league games.

Taveras is making 2.25M while Dickerson and Stubbs would be making the league minimum.  To me, this is a no-brainer.  Walt Jocketty needs to cut his losses and get rid of Taveras.  And while he’s at it, go ahead and get rid of Dusty Baker too if he plans on winning.  Afterall, Baker is the one batting Taveras leadoff, but that is another issue.
