A’s Get a Deal on Giambi

The A’s are reportedly close to signing DH/1B Jason Giambi to a 1-yr deal with an option for 2010. The deal is a steal for the A’s!

The proposed deal would pay Giambi $4M in 2009 and include an option for $6.5M in 2010 a $1.25M buyout. That means the A’s get Giambi on either a 1-yr deal at $6.25M or a 2-yr deal at $10.5M. Can we say bargain?!

The A’s desperately needed to upgrade their offense, which was the worst in the AL. According to Keith Law the A’s finished last in the AL in runs scored in 2008, last in OBP and a very distant last in slugging (almost 200 total bases behind second-to-last Seattle). The A’s DH at-bats produced a dismal .229/.337/.397 line while Giambi produced a line of .247/.373/.502. Giambi shouldn’t even lay his eyes on leather so his bad defense won’t factor in this signing. He will be the full-tim DH.

Giambi should produce at or close to his numbers from last which included 32 homers to go with his high OBP and SLG. Add that to an already strong defense, a good pitching staff, and what Matt Holliday will bring and to the lineup and potential bounce back seasons from Mark Ellis, Travis Buck, and Daric Barton and the A’s have a legit shot at the AL West title this year with the Angels losing their best bat and the Rangers still in desperate need of pitchers that are actually good.

I hope it means we get to see the Tats and the long hair Giambi again, when he was one of the best hitters in the AL!

oh, AND DROP THE PORNO ‘STACHE TOO! Before he was a Yank, Giambi was one of my favorite non Cub players at the time.
