Pettitte to Retire or Return as a Yankee

The New York Yankees shut down famed starter Andy Pettitte for the season with a bad shoulder and he isn’t sure if he is returning after this season. Pettitte did say if he did pitch it would be for the Yankees and no one else. “I want to play here. I want to play here. We’ll see what happens, but I want to play here.” I’m not so sure that is a good idea though.

Pettitte also made it clear that the Yankees want him back. “[The Yankees], they’ve pretty much let it be known they’d like to have me back,” Pettitte said. “I want to try to make a quick decision. Hopefully I don’t get home and scuffle with it.” I’m glad to hear he wants to make a quick decision but is it the right decision?

His shoulder has bothered him the past few months (an MRI showed no structural damage) and his numbers show it.

Not only has his shoulder been a problem but I’m not sure coming back to the Yankees is the right thing at all. Take a look at his home/road splits.

Not good. He obviously has trouble at home. He also has major trouble against right handers.

So, with Pettitte on the fence about returning next season at the age of 37 he still has value as a 3/4 starter that will eat innings if his shoulder is fine, but, I think he should consider teams other than the Yankees.
