First Place Rays

Last night’s game was a nail-biter. With the Rays go into the 9th with a 1-0 lead and Troy Percival taking the ball the Red Sox/Orioles game ended with the O’s winning 5-4 meaning the Rays were tied for 1st for the first time ever this late in the season. Then Percival gave up a game-tying homerun that took us into extra innings.

No big deal.

The Rays fans would drown out the small Yankee fan crowd (that’s right, the small Yankee fan crowd) and start chanting their own chants. You would hear “Let’s Go Rays”, “Yankees Suck”, and some loud noise when the Rays had two strikes on the Yankees.

The bottom of the 11th came and Cliff Floyd started out with a single. Joe Maddon pinch ran with none other than fan-favorite Jonny Gomes. Gomes would then steal 2nd base (where’d the speed come from, he’s got 3 steals in two games and only started one) with Gabe Gross facing Mariano Rivera in his 2nd inning of work. Gross would then line a grounder up the middle and Gomes would score uncontested.

The Rays had reached 1st place all alone.

Walking out of the stadium you would see strangers high-fiving each other, cowbells clanging, and chants of “1st place Rays”. It was a great experience.

Rays fans, the true ones that is, have long waited for this to happen. The season is far from over but to sit alone in 1st midway through May is a dream come true for Rays fans.

The best part about all this is that the Rays aren’t going anywhere anytime soon.

Now this is some good news… especially since it was done against the NY Yankees (without A-rod) The Rays are one of the great stories of 2008 so far. Hopefully they can keep up the winning ways.

It looks now that my prediction is coming to be and the Rays could be this years Colorado Rockies. But it is still May and they need to prepare for the long haul. Their pitching has held up thus far and that needs to remain constant for the Rays to be a contender!

Now to win tonight against Mussina! and add to a lead.

    Let’s go Rays!

    Nice article Jonathan.

Thanks Erik! I also thought they could be this year’s version of the Rockies in the way they surprise everyone with all their young talent. I think the Rays will handle Mussina fine. I honestly hope they play Gomes more, he is such an ignitor and a fan-favorite for that team.

I went to Cowbell night against the Red Sox… I was laid off recently so my attending Rays games have been shall we say few and far between. But I flip in between games and am very impressed with their hustle.
