The Colorado Rockies are finally doing what I thought they should’ve done since last year; they are playing Chris Iannetta over Yorvit Torrealba.

I wrote back in November about Torrealba when the Mets were trying to sign him to a three year deal that it was a horrible idea and then the Rockies give him a 2 year deal that I dicarded as well, for good reason. He is no more than a back up catcher that had a good postseason.

Chris Iannetta was given minimal chances to win the catcher job last year, rarely playing back to back games. He did’t fair well in his sparse playing and was sent back to AAA.

This is year was no different. Torrealba got a 2-year contract worth $7M but he hasn’t done so well hitting only .235./287/.383 with a 4:16 BB:K rate with 2 homers and 6 doubles in 81 at-bats and is 0 for 3 in stolen base attempts. Iannetta was given a chance and he has flourished. He is hitting (as of 5/8) .345/.413/.655 with 6:16 BB:K rate and 3 homers, 6 doubles, 1 triple, and 14 RBI in 55 at-bats.

Iannetta isn’t as good as those numbers but he is certainly capable of hitting .300/.350/.450 with 15 homers full-time while playing at least average defense at catcher.

The Rockies are doing the right thing by giving Iannetta the bulk of the at-bats lately and they should continue to give Iannetta 4-5 starts per week and give Torrealba the backup catcher job even though he is making ten times as much as Iannetta.
