Rockies sign Holliday to 2yr $23M deal

The Colorado Rockies signed outfielder Matt Holliday to a $23 million, two-year contract that takes away his two years of arbitration but none of his free agent years. I’m not getting this at all.

I just don’t see the logic in signing him to this deal if you are not getting any of his free agent years locked up. Even if they signed him to a one year deal they still have control of him for another year so it’s not as if this deal takes him off the market because he wouldn’t even hit the market after 2008 if he signed a one year deal.

The only that is good is that they are making an attempt to let the fans know they are “keeping” him around for atleast two more years. He is a Scott Boras client so he would most likely test the free agent waters after his two years of arbitration but I still think it was unneccesary to make a two year deal outside of getting press for the deal.

wow. the rockies front office makes weird business decisions in the hopes that it will always work out…just like last trading deadline..we did nothing and they tried to justify it to the fans..luckily the rox went on an amazing streak only to get smoked in the series but either way they need to start making better biz decisions..

They are looking into locking Tulo up to a 5 or 6 year deal around $30M. I think they should do it in a hurry.

Rockies needed to do this long term or just the one year.

Rockies had to extend their best player.

I agree with you Charlie. Do it for one year because you still have control of him for the next year. The Rox already have him under control for those two years. They needed to extend him atleast 3 years or just do a one year deal.
