OAKLAND — The Oakland Athletics announced today the club has designated outfielder Milton Bradley for assignment and has selected infielder Kevin Melillo from Triple-A Sacramento.

Bradley is batting .292 with two home runs and seven RBI in 19 games this season. He had three stints on the disabled list due to various injuries. He was most recently placed on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to June 3 with a strained right calf and was activated for Wednesday’s game against Cincinnati. Bradley had five stints on the DL in his two seasons with the A’s. He missed 51 games due to injury this season, 59 last year, 85 in 2005 and 61 in 2003.

Originally selected in the fifth round of the 2004 First-Year Player Draft, the 25-year old Melillo was batting .267 with 21 doubles, six triples, seven home runs and 40 RBI in 67 games for Sacramento this season, seeing all of his action at second base. He also had a .465 slugging percentage and a .368 on-base percentage. – MLB.com

No word on exactly why Milton Bradley was let go. I think it has something to do with his injury history and the emergences of OF Travis Buck and LF/DH Jack Cust. I really don’t think it has anything to do with off-field problems or mis-bahavior.

The move still strikes me as odd though. The A’s have the best starting pitching in the AL but their offense lacks. Bradley was their #3 hitter most of the time he was in the lineup. But I guess when it’s time to cut your loses you do it.

-Oakland starter Rich Harden gave up one hit in one inning of relief for AAA Sacramento on Wednesday, clearing the way for his return from the disabled list. He will work out of the bullpen until he gains the arm strength to start again.

-Boston’s ace Curt Schilling will be placed on the 15-day DL when the Red Sox get to San Diego on Friday for the start of a weekend series. An MRI exam found no major problems. But the right-hander received a cortisone shot in his ailing shoulder, which he attributed to tendinitis, and the team knew he wouldn’t be able to make his next scheduled start on Sunday.

Joe Girardi has declined an offer from the Baltimore Orioles to become their next manager, his agent, Steve Mandel, told ESPN on Thursday.

-White Sox optioned OF Jerry Owens to AAA.

-Can’t believe I left this one off yesterday, Houston placed reliever Brad Lidge on the 15-day DL.

-There was a small trade yesterday when the Tigers acquired lefty pitcher Macay McBride from the Atlanta Braves for lefty pitcher Wilfredo Ledezma.

-The Washington Nats activated reliever Luis Ayala from the 60-day disabled list and they purchased the contract of hitting streak king OF Brandon Watson from AAA. He went 0-3 in his 2007 debut last night.

-And if you somehow missed it Sammy Sosa belted his 600th career home run last night against his former team the Cubs. Congrats to him!

It would make sense for the Padres to do it. They need an OF that can produce badly!

I know he’s been injured a lot and they have to do what they have to do, but I’m REALLY gonna miss his homerun handshake with Swisher…LOL

The Royals ended up canceling the trade. Not sure if they re-visited it and pulled the trigger but I know they ended up canceling the trade.
