For the first time ever, Major League Baseball’s draft will be on television this year, with ESPN2 airing it on June 7 from 2-6 p.m. It will consist of the first round and the sandwhich round and each team will get 5 minutes per selection. With that said, I decided to offer up my mock draft of what the televised event could look like. This draft is heavy on high school pitching talent and in catching talent, both at the high school and college level.

This is going to be a big draft for the San Fransisco Giants. They get the 10th overall pick plus 2 more in the first round. Then they have 3 more in the sandwhich round. This draft should help them revamp a worthless farm system. The Toronto Blue Jays have two first rounders and 3 sandwhich picks. Padres GM Kevin Towers was so brilliant by telling his players not to accept arbitration, he got 5 sandwhich round picks thanks to his ability to take advantage of the system. Very smart move!

Then there are teams like Tampa Bay, Kansas City, Pittsburgh, and Baltimore that have 4 of the top 5 picks but don’t pick again until the 2nd round (possibly 66th overall). No need to worry, they should each get great picks at the top of this draft.

Without any further rambling I present you with our 2007 MLB Mock Draft!

Thanks for posting a link to our draft!

Boy, I hope it will be more aesthically pleasing then a bunch of conference calls. Price will be a fine pick but what do you think about us just shutting him down, he has pitched A WHOLE LOT! Good job. Go Rays!

  • 4. Jonathan C. Mitchell  |  May 8, 2007 at 7:09 pm

I hope so too. I hope there are representatives there and they invite the top 5-8 draft prospects. I would love to see the Rays give Price his jersey! I honestly wouldn’t be too upset if we shut Price down. His arm is too valuable to us. I don’t think it will be necessary though unless an injury occurs, either minor or major. Thanks for the comment, good to hear from you again Roman!

i cant see why atlanta would want to walk away with more than one pitcher. and you got brackman going to seatlle? i wouldnt be surprised if they picked up highschooler burgess

  • 6. Jonathan C. Mitchell  |  May 9, 2007 at 2:07 pm

Atlanta loves to load up on young arms and they will get two very good ones. The only other position they would consider is college OF but there aren’t any worth their time other than Julio Borbon but he’s a Boras client. Speaking of Boras client, that’t why I have Brackman falling to Seattle. They aren’t scared of his clients and they will grab him if available at #10. Seattle also love collegiate players in the first round, if they take a high schooler in this draft in the first I would be surprised. Thanks for the comment Tom, keep coming back!

Can you tell me any players that are good that will come out on the draft

BTW Site is getting better and better

  • 9. George  |  May 16, 2007 at 10:22 am

Matt Wieters will not fall that low. The Rays will take him with the #1 overall pick and put a team on the field that can’t be stopped from hitters 1-9.

To JohnLuke: Thanks for the compliment! And to answer your question: It’s too hard to tell now. There are a lot of first round busts and a lot of first round studs. It’ll be a couple years before we know for sure.

George: I think he will fall because he is a Boras client but that would be a nice lineup for the Rays and they do have the pitching prospect coming soon (Niemann, Sonnastine, Talbot, Hammel, McGee, Davis, Hellickson…)
